The science behind modern dental implants can be traced back to 1953 and a chance discovery by Per-Ingvar Brånemarka Swedish Scientist and physician. He found that whilst studying blood flow in rabbits that titanium could be made to fuse with bone. After decades of meticulous research he published scientific papers confirming the successful osseointegration of titanium implants to replace missing teeth.
The modern implant can replace a single missing tooth, several teeth with a bridge or a whole arch of teeth where the implants can support a removable denture or fixed bridgework.
Implants can be extremely durable, and can even last some patients for an entire lifetime. Whilst they certainly can’t decay, their longevity can be affected by bacteria in a similar way to gum disease affecting teeth.
Implants can definitely be a worthwhile investment for those who are missing teeth. However, it is far from a case of ‘fit and forget’. To remain strong and long-lasting they must be properly cared for. The patient has to maintain a high standard of home care.
The team at Wanstead Dental Practice has the knowledge and skill to restore and help you maintain your dental implants.
